Peter Forbes is a talented Vancouver BC area artist continuously experimenting with new techniques and media. While attending the Vancouver School of Art (now known as the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design) Peter held his first gallery show of original work.
In the early eighties he traveled the high seas for more inspiration and it was while sailing that he first picked up carving tools and experimented in wood and other three dimensional works. Upon his return Peter gravitated to the specialty signage industry where for the next fifteen years he produced a legacy of work that fills the storefronts and lobbies of many local businesses. As well, his signage work has reached as far as Europe, Australia, Japan, the Middle East and the United States.
By blending his creative side with the commercial aspects of his signage background Peter has now been inspired to establish himself with a unique style of artwork on recycled oak barrels. The designs range from simple to very complex and become family heirlooms as well as wonderful adornments, advertising tools or basic signage.
Here is a barrel top carving with lots of perspective carved into the 3/4" thick oak. The horse's shadow line across the grape vines amplifies this effect. Also notice the glass of the green houses in the distance.
